Run a rough shod

To “run roughshod over” means to treat with brutal force. (Roughshod is defined in reference to horseshoes with projecting nails for gripping). It would not be surprising for one unfamiliar with the term “shod” (footwear) to imagine that the expression is actually “run rough shot over.” Perhaps this eggcorn conveys more a notion of haphazardous force than brutal force
